Getting The Best Out Of Your Unit- Some Basic Rules

  • TENS is most effective whilst it is turned quite high, and,for lower back pain, when larger electrodes are used. Eight out of ten people will experience a pain reduction after 30- 40 minutes and often enjoy residual benifit after switching the unit off.
  • Use Your TENS Machine- the only time it works is when it is attached to you and switched on. If you experience pain every day use your TENS machine everyday.
  • Use Your TENS Machine Correctly- most people who initially report that TENS did not work either used incorrect electrode size or poorly positioned them, or did not turn it up strong enough to stimulate the larger pain blocking nerve endings. To begin with, you may find strong stimulation a little unpleasant but it is rarely worse than the pain and becomes comfortable after 5-10 minutes.
  • When you get used to TENS try a different programme- muscle stimulation is often very beneficial. The TPN 300D also has an 'anti-accomodation' mode which provides constantly altering stimulation patterns that prevent you becoming resistent to the TENS.
